Deborah Tannen and Six Contrasts Between Men and Women

Task: Find any language data (youtube video clips may be helpful, film, television, or personal observations at home) that show men or women in conversation – look at each of Deborah Tannen’s six contrasts, and observe men and women’s style of communication.  If the contrast seems not to apply or to be relevant, then consider why this might be – is the sample untypical, is Professor Tannen’s view mistaken, is something else happening? Refer to the six contrasts mentioned in this Tannen outline, and write an analysis of your observations.

Prompt: to what extent do Tannen’s contrasts accurately describe the communication styles of men and women?

Responses: 250-500 words neatly written or typed.

Due: Wednesday, April 18

I Have a Dream

Dr. King’s rhetorical style is identifiably unique, for he uses rich imagery, figurative language (metaphor and simile), repetition, allusions to famous people and ideas, and parallel structure.  Using these stylistic features, create your dream speech.

Post your dream speech and comment on three of your classmates’ speeches.  Be sure to take the role of POSITIVE, CRITIC, OR SUGGESTIONS, as you provide comments and questions.

Dream on!

“A Change of Heart About Animals”

After thinking about your reading, discussion, and analysis of Rifkin’s article and the letters in response to it, what do you personally think about Rifkin’s point?  Do you think it is true, as Rifkin says, that “many of our fellow creatures are more like us than we had ever imagined”?  Do you think we need to change the way we treat the animals around us?  Or do you think Rifkin is wrong?  Write a letter expressing your viewpoint to the editor of the newspaper.

If you like, you may start out with “Dear Editor:”

Do citizens have the right to videotape police?

There are arguments for and against citizens videotaping police. What is your opinion? What reasons might support your claim?

After making your claim, assume the role of ‘devil’s advocate’ and write a comment disagreeing OR agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously with two of your classmates.

Remember to be polite in your comments and look for ways to use appeals to logos, pathos, or ethos.

Have fun debating!
