The Written Assignment

This is the assignment for 11th grade, second semester.

 

Stage 1: The interactive oral

·         A student-led discussion (usually accompanied by a visual like a PowerPoint, Prezi, posterboard, or Wikispace).

·         Prompt is assigned by the teacher, and addresses context of the work.
Stage 2: The Reflective Statement

  • 300-400 words
  • It is a personal statement based on your understanding of the context of the work
  • At least one reflective statement written for each work studied

Stage 3: Supervised Writing

  • The teacher provides three or four prompts to choose from
  • Students write one “supervised writing” piece per work studied (three total)
  • Takes place in a one-hour timed period

Stage 4: The Essay

  • Based on the “gem of an idea” from one of the supervised writings
  • 1,200 to 1,500 words.
  • An argumentative piece with a title and appropriate MLA citations
  • Teacher will help develop the topic and comment on first draft

For those of you counting, this means each student will do ONE interactive oral, AT LEAST THREE reflective statements,THREE supervised writings, and ONE essay. This takes place in the second semester of year one, but students can continue drafting and perfecting the essay until about February of year two.
