“I, Too” Project

On Tuesday, we’ll study some poetry written by a man named Langston Hughes, and you will write a poem using one of his famous ones (“I, Too”) as a model. It should be fun and challenging, and it’s related to Ethnic Studies.

To prepare for tomorrow’s project, please do the following activities:

Watch the Brainpop movie on the Harlem Renaissance, and do the quiz, challenge and time zone x. Be sure to submit your results to the the teacher.

Then watch these two videos about Langston Hughes. Write down three things you think are important or interesting about him, and give the paper to Ms. Sanchez (you may have to sign in to your Google account in order to watch the second video):

After you complete these activities, you may go to any Brainpop movie and do it for extra credit.

You have been assigned one of these parts of Charles Darwin’s life:

Personal/Family – Birth, Death, Marriages, Children, Where he lived, Illnesses, his job, etc. (If you are a number one)

Challenges – What problems did he experience in life? Did people criticize his ideas? Why? How did he deal with those problems? (If you are number two)

Accomplishments – Why is he famous? How did he communicate his ideas? Did he win any awards? Are there special days when his work is celebrated? Why do we remember him now? How would the world be different if he hadn’t done his work? (If you are number three)

First, go to this Brainpop movie on his life. Take notes on your section, and also complete the test.

Prepare a ninety-second to two-minute presentation on your assignment.  Put information into your own words.  Draw an image, and write key words on a poster that will help classmates learn from you.  Use index cards and practice your presentation. You must practice your entire presentation at least once with either Mr. Ferlazzo or Ms. Sanchez.

This is how your presentation will begin:

Hello, my name is __________________. I’m going to tell you about Charles Darwin’s (Personal Life, Challenges, or Accomplishments).

Please take notes on the other presentations because you will be writing a historical biography about Darwin’s life afterwards.

Go this site and learn about New Orleans.

Be sure to scroll near the bottom and watch videos about tourist attractions in New Orleans AND at least one video about Hurricane Katrina.

We will spend 30 minutes learning about New Orleans.

Then, we will return to the room and students will write a response to this question:
