Dream Speech, Period 6

Dear sophomores,

You’ve been working hard to inspire others to follow you, both as an expert on a specific research topic and as a speechwriter. Your dream speeches are an important contribution to our class, our community, and our world. Your thoughts and ideas can have wide-ranging implications to help ease suffering and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity. All you have to do is imagine!

  1. Review: Make sure that your dream speech is just the way you want it, free from simple spelling and grammar errors, and full of those persuasive rhetorical techniques we have studied.

2. Publish: Click on the ‘leave a comment’ link at the top of this post. Follow the directions for uploading your ‘comment,’ in this case your dream speech. If you want, you can click an option to have your classmates’ comments emailed to you. I recommend this.

3. Read and reply: Once your classmates begin to upload their dream speeches, you can reply. Identify what you like about the speech; look for good examples of rhetorical techniques. Share other questions or ideas you have about the speech. Keep it positive. If you have a concern, you might consider speaking to that person directly rather than leaving a comment. Please comment on AT LEAST TWO of your classmates’ speeches. Also, our goal is to leave comments with each student writer, so everyone feels acknowledged for their ideas and hard work.

Thank you for all of your hard work and risk taking!

Kind Regards,

Mr. Coey

  1. Homelessness

This is not humanity where homelessness are considered unequally.
This is not humanity where people intentionally walk aside from the situation.
Homelessness are people without a shelter to call home and a voice to change the society.
Homelessness are caused by unemployment, separation, or medical care. Did you ever stop for a moment and ask yourself: “Why am I a human being deserting a fellow homeless person that needs my assistant?”

We, the people of the United States, still have children, men, and women living on the streets, waving signs for help, wearing filthy torn clothes, and asking for spare changes. And their fate can be our fate. Their failure can be our failure; and their unsuccessful will be our unsuccessful.
They’re not invisible human that you can’t ignore by criticizing their appearance. We are all created equally and no one is superior than others.

Homeless aren’t less than a human, they were once like us a student, they were once educated, and they were once human before we cast them aside like animals in a cage like their a complete waste of crumpled paper waiting to be recycled again, yet you completely miscalculated about them. They need another opportunity to redeem themselves, but people are stubborn.

Dear fellow students, on the 14th of February 2017, I saw a homeless man crossing the street across from the gas station, Valero, and I asked him a few questions. How does people treat you by your appearance mister? His response was heartbreaking that I was in tears when he said, “ I wasn’t consider a human anymore. I’ve been treated like a dog that been tied up to a pole to be left behind forever.” What kind of people did you come across that helped you? “The people who actually care about my situation were the loving people and the caring people.” Then after the personal questions, I asked if he was hungry and he responded “Yes, I am starving because I haven’t ate in two or three days”. I gave him three bags of snacks from our school cafeteria and both of us departed our ways saying farewells to our next destination, and the homeless man shouted, “ Young man don’t follow my steps because you are the next generation in line.”

I see children, men, and women who are called hobos can change for the better and be treated equally again like a human. I hear homeless asking “ Can you spare some change?” Even if it’s a dollar you can still light their hunger days away. I feel a knife penetrating my chest that I can’t stand to see them suffering harsh journey up ahead. Homeless are like vultures skying the desert plain waiting for a opportunity to feast on the old corpse left behind. Now is the time to give them a shelter where they can call it a home. Now is the time to treat homeless people like human again. Now is the time to give them opportunity to redeem themselves. If not then I lost hope for humanity. As the great Jewel Kilcher said “ We must all work together to end youth homelessness in America.”

I have dream that in the future generation there won’t be any more homeless people.
I have a dream that for homelessness to be treat equally as before.
I HAVE A DREAM FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO END HOMELESSNESS!

  2. Lend a Hand Out of Poverty

Why do all the cries for help continuously fall upon deaf ears? We as a society know we are stronger together but we constantly push aside the issue that lays in front of our very eyes. We could see our dear fallen family members on the sides of the street, under our highways, and even in our neighborhoods. From various places you could hear the cries of hunger and the grumbling stomachs of children. From a distance you could still feel the the pain many that our dear family members have suffered. On many occasions we all feel the feeling hunger but the feeling of starving can cause an unbearable amount of pain.We could see the depressed faces of children who have have been attacked by poverty through not only the advertisements on television but through the their innocent eyes which tell a story.
We must take it upon ourselves to make a difference in their lives.

“Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty — less than $1.25 a day.”- http://www.dosomething.org.
Similar to the great depression which occurred from (1929-1939) the great depression was a ten year period of time where America had a great economic downfall which left many homeless, poor, and malnourished.Due to this it has lead to a large amount of deaths and many ailments. Poverty has been on a never ending cycle which we as family must put an end to this reality many of our people still live in today we must address the problem at hand.

How long will we continue to suppress our response to poverty? How long will you continue to be a bystander and spectate? Poverty is like a bottomless pit that continues to grow in depth. NOW is the time to take an action to put an end to poverty. Poverty is a beast that walks along the streets lurking for someone to suffer the same pain. NOW is the time to end the beast’s grip on our people.NOW is the time to take a stand. I can vision a world that eliminates the thought of poverty, I can vision a world that gives everyone a fair chance of a to a road to success. I can vision a world filled with love FOR EACHOTHER. Once again NOW is the time to unite as a family and lend a helping hand to progress together.
Will YOU lend that helping hand?

      A World Filled With Litter
In today’s world people are littering too much all around the world, therefore 1.9 billion tons of litter ends up in ocean every year. Some trash that people don’t pick up gets blown by Mother Nature forever and ever. I see the small pieces of litter you have in your hand could amount to billions of litter at the end of the year that you don’t throw away. I hear that 8% of men claim that they would litter daily while 2% of the women would do the same. It hurts to hear those things going in your ear thinking a lot of animals tend to eat litter than die. I feel painful for those who get affected by litter such as the marine life and animals. Littering is like a knife carving into Mother Nature. Littering is evilness seeping into the earth. Now is the time to recycle than litter. Now is the time to stop killing Mother Nature and keep it clean. Now is the time to keep our world clean and ocean blue as the sky. Like the great Robert Orben said once “there’s so much pollution in the air, now that if it weren’t for our lungs there’d be no place to put it all. I have a dream to not see us spent 11$ billion cleaning up litter and 7.5 pounds of roadside litter gone! I have a dream our world would be greener and would be cleaner! I have a dream to see how Mother Nature used to be!

  3. Police Brutality has been occurring for years. Starting from Kajieme Powell who was reported stealing energy drinks and pastries from a store, he originally had a knife, he dropped the weapon and tried to approach the police officers and was shot 12 times. Rumain Brisbon was shot and killed because the police officer had mistaken his pill bottle for a gun. Two completely different situations but both men were killed for no legitimate reason.
I see the blood on the ground, I hear innocent people screaming for dear life, I feel empathy for the families . I feel as if we need to start the change, it starts with us.
Police Brutality is as unjustified as Trumps executive border barring people from entering the United States
Police Brutality is an execution. The police are manipulating us with their power. Using their jobs as an easy ways to kill the black community.
Now this is the time to stand up to the authority
Now is the time for our voices to be heard
Now is the time to take action for these unjustified acts
Like the great Martin Luther King, he believed in a non-violent environment as he says in his speech which was in August of 1963 “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unbreakable horrors of police brutality”. He thought we should be treated equally disregarding our color or gender.
I have a dream that police brutality stops for good
I have a dream that we aren’t beaten because of the color of our skin
I HAVE A DREAM that one day, as a community we can move towards peace on earth.

    Bullying

Alone in darkness, unable to focus on life. Constantly asking to themselves, “Why am I here? Do I have a purpose in living?” So many conflicts are occurring to one person and it truly affects them. He or she is trying to be themselves but bullying gets in the way. For those reasons, bullying is stopping people, more towards young individuals, from the dreams they plan to achieve in the future.

Dear fellow students, I am here today to speak on behalf of all those affected by bullying. The purpose behind this speech is to influence all to make bullying come to an end. Also, to focus on change for the better. Not a small change, but a dramatic change. A change that will carry on a legacy and soon all will live in a world where hate is not used. Giving everyone a perfect lifestyle to become who they are.

Everyday an individual is put-down by a harsh comment, giving them tough decisions to make. In today’s society, bullying can to lead to serious outcomes. For bullying, not all outcomes have a happy ending.

I see people being laughed at for their appearance. The lives of others can be unknown to you. The struggles this individual lives everyday can be tragic. An image or saying that will stick to the mind of the many affected by bullying forever and will always be haunting. I hear the sobbing that bring an individual down. The cries that show the pain majority go through when bullying is brought to their attention unexpectedly. I feel the struggles of getting along with one another. It’s not always easy to be friends with everyone, but being your true self is the easiest.

All living each and everyday like a stack of Jenga blocks; retrieving the hate comments and stacking them onto each other to other comments, only creating even bigger complications. Patiently waiting for the stack to tumble down, making the situation worse. And the difficulty of restacking each block as if it replaces the individual’s life. This heavy force of messages, not only is harmful, but it creates such a negative vibe to many.

Now is the time to stand up against hatred, and move towards positivity. Now is the time to realize that one response can be extremely effective to people. Now is the time to be your true self and forget about tragedy.

Like the great Steve Jobs has once said, “Our time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Go out in life and strive against your ability to care for all! Don’t mind irrelevant opinions others have to share. It causes problems and they’re unnecessary. Don’t listen to the negativity that will change who you truly are. Strive to make a difference in the world with your words!

I have a dream that one day, all of humanity will strive to love one another with no hate intended. I have a dream that every individual affected by bullying will fight against the hatred and stand up to make a difference for society! I HAVE A DREAM WE WILL LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND THAT YOU’RE THE MOTIVATION TO MAKE A CHANGE! STAND UP, SPEAK OUT, AND A TRANSFORMATION WILL OCCUR!

    1. Armondo,

That’s a beautiful message. I appreciate your encouraging, supportive, and idealistic tone in the concluding paragraph!

  6. Expectation

Society has formed this perfect person, with expectations that no one can ever exceed. Expectations that lead others to be put down for being different, they are trying to be themselves and not the “perfect person.” They are not trying to change to be society’s type of “perfect”, but be who they are supposed to be. People want to live their lives full of expectations. Around the world, everyone has expectations for another individual to live up to and people are trying to change themselves into what that person expects.
I see that people expect one another to do something for them and sometimes it’s hard for that person because they can’t do what that person wants and it hurts them trying to do something someone expects. I hear that people have to live up to others expectations and try to live up to. They want someone to live up to their expectations probably because that someone doesn’t look like them. I feel like people with high expectations should lower their expectations to nothing from others. They should do so, so that the other individual doesn’t feel pressured to be what someone wants them to be. Trying to live up to someone’s expectations is like trying to cup the ocean in your hands. Impossible much?
Why expect someone to live up to your expectations when you can’t do it yourself?
How would you feel like if someone were to have really high expectations for you and you’re trying to live up to what they want?
Unrealistic expectations lead to disappointments. When you compare reality of life to your expectations, they are different and will never be the same unless if you try your best to make it happen and be the same.
Now is the time where we don’t try to change for one’s expectations. Now is the time where we should stop expecting things we want and let it be a surprise. Now is the time where we stop repeating the same act and expecting different results. Like the great Bruce Lee once said, “I am not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” Yet, people must live up to someone’s expectations because they want to be that person who expects them to do so.
I have a dream that people will stop having such high expectations from other people because they will lose or are losing confidence in themselves.
I have a dream that people will not change themselves to fit in someone’s expectations of perfect and that they will change themselves to who they want to be.
I HAVE A DREAM that we no longer have to live up to be what someone wants us to be. We must be ourselves and change for our own purpose and not theirs. One day when everyone stops having expectations from one another, we will all be able to be ourselves and we don’t have to be what someone wants us to be.
    Thanks you.

  7. As of recent, sexual assault was brought up against the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump. He was accused of sexual assault against multiple women, but he had always denied the accusations by simply saying that he had never said anything sexual about any of those women and that nothing sexual had happened between him and those women.
I see how women have to live their lives, how they are very insecure about themselves because they were sexually assaulted by the men who were once in their lives or by complete strangers. I don’t understand why or even how a man can even do that to a woman. Woman were not put on this earth to be treated like nothing, they were not put on this earth to be taken advantage of for a man’s needs, they were not put on this earth to ever feel like they are worthless, that they have no value to no one.
I hear how women have a wall built up just so they wouldn’t feel broken anymore. How they have to push down their feelings and move forward in their lives and not reflect on the past anymore. How women struggle getting up in the morning everyday after being sexually assaulted, how hard it is to look in the mirror, how hard it is to look at their bodies everyday, and especially how hard it is to love themselves.
Women are the most strongest human beings, they can be broken into a million pieces but still be strong enough to put themselves back together without any help.
I personally find it hilarious when men think that they can do whatever they want to women just because they’re men and think they can control any women by assaulting them. Like do they not know that a woman gave them life? That took care for them when they were born? That feeds them and loves them unconditionally? So if their mothers were sexually assaulted, would it still be okay then to do exactly the same thing that man did to their mothers to another woman?
Men that sexually assault women need to take a moment and think, what if this had happened to my mother? What if this happened to my sister, cousins, aunts, or even grandmothers? Would it still be okay to continue with the sexual assault? Or no?
I have a dream that women can live freely without being sexually assaulted by a man. I have a dream that no man ever plans on sexually assaulting a woman and make them feel worthless for their own pleasure. I HAVE A DREAM THAT SEXUAL ASSAULT WILL END!

    1. Melissa,

That is a powerful speech that should make male readers stop and think. I especially appreciate your rhetorical question about how men might feel if they consider their mothers being assaulted. Thought-provoking!

    Never Give Up!

Have you ever woke up in the morning and think these thoughts:”Wow. How am I ever going to get out of this situation” or “I give up on life”? When people of this generation have an unbearable amount of problems and situations going on in their life, the first thing they tend to do is give in to these conflicts, they give up. They stop pursuing their dreams. They stop moving forward. When they are faced with an overwhelming amount of these problems and situations, they say,”I can’t” or “I give up.” I see people every day walking with their heads down, looking at the ground.I hear individuals screaming their lungs out saying “I can’t do this!”. I feel that if this continues, then everyone will feel the same way about every little problem they face in their lives, like if they go head to head with a single problem they’ll crumble like a balled up piece of paper. They will feel lower than the ground itself.

Now is the time to look your issues in the eye and say,”You won’t bring me down!” Now is the time to not go around your conflicts, but go through them. Now is the time to ask yourself, “Who is stronger: my doubts, or myself?” Now is the time to finally say,”I CAN!!” We call upon our inner strength to pursue our dreams and keep moving forward. We call upon our brothers and sisters who are probably going through the same thing and are staying strong. We call upon our perseverance to be stronger than anyone else. As the great Jack Ma once said,”Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.”

I have a dream that people will strive to obtain their goals. I have a dream that their will no longer be “I can’t” or “I give up” quotes anymore. I have a dream that everyone can finally say “I CAN!” I HAVE A DREAM OF SELF PERSEVERANCE!

    1. i like how you said We call upon our inner strength to pursue our dreams and keep moving forward.” sounds very positive! good job!

  9. Human Trafficking
Everywhere in the world, there is human trafficking. There’s some parts of the world where human trafficking is legal and illegal. Either way i think human/sex trafficking should be ban. In Sacramento there’s sex trafficking mainly on Stockton Boulevard.Stockton Boulevard is well known for sex trafficking. Even if they see cops rolling by, they still mind their own business and do what they need to do.
I see many dozens of women walking down the street, flagging down cars, and hoping right in with strangers. I hear the sirens everywhere arresting rapist, prostitute, and kidnappers. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal activity, following behind drug deals. I hear the cries of children screaming for help. Even lots of children under 18 years old is involved in human trafficking.Traffickers are like monsters, who wants money more than anything. There’s people out there in our world who kidnaps youth and women and sell them to random strangers. They’re like slaves where they are auction of to the buyer.
Now is the time to change this problem and stop human trafficking. We change this by telling others how would they feel if it’s their own child. If we all stand up and take actions and stop human trafficking once in for all. In some countries, even being outside of your house is not safe for your family because there can be traffickers who is waiting for an opportunity to kidnap kids and women. Now is the time to stand up and take actions and fight against traffickers. You wouldn’t want this to happen to your daughter, wife, friends, even your family. I know I cannot do everything but still I can do something and because I can’t do everything, i will not refuse to do something that I can do. Human trafficking can lead to kidnapping, drugs, and even death. Do something grateful, people may imitate it. Like the great Ricky Martin, he’s the founder of Ricky Martin Foundation. His foundation specifically involved with child trafficking. He believes there shouldn’t be anything that is very inappropriate that deals with children’s. I have a dream, one day children can play in their neighborhood without parents worrying about their kids being taken away from them. I have a dream where human trafficking is non existence. We can make a change. We live in a world where crimes happens everyday. Are you willing to stand up and take actions?

    1. “In some countries, even being outside of your house is not safe for your family because there can be traffickers who is waiting for an opportunity to kidnap kids and women. ” I like how you involved the other countries into your speech. Good Job!

  10. Hidden wounds
The same joyous person you see at school, who is always wearing long sleeves despite the weather. “I don’t want to get a sunburn” is an excuse made on the spot. Under the sleeves and smile tells a whole new story. A burn here. A cut there. A piece of flesh that was once so beautiful and untouched from harm are now hidden within the sleeves and are covered with damaged skin being covered up by make-up. Out of sight of wondering eyes. Not accessible for those to criticize their self-inflicted wounds. Behind the locked doors of their bathroom or bedroom. Hurting themselves to feel relief from an out of control state of mind.
If only you could see what goes on their mind. The pain they feel only to be release from a cold blade or a burning match. Their eyes are glazed over like newly cut glass from all the hidden tears flowing down their faces. Their voices are silent as they plead for help to stop, be heard, and understood. With each burn and cut they feel a little bit closer to satisfaction. Watching the crimson seep out of their wound and hit the floor. Hearing the match strike the box and ignite before slowly dancing across their once flawless skin.
This is the time to wake up because their cries are as silent as death approaching it’s unexpecting victim. 1 out of 5 females and 1 out of 7 males will cause a self injury to themselves during teen years. Some will say “It’s just a phase” or “it will pass” even “You’re doing it for attention” but it’s more than a “phase” or “attention seeking” . Instead of a short period of time, it would last for years such as from age 14 to age 20. You’ll never guess who inflicts pain to themselves ,for those who do will often refuse to express it. It is hidden to avoid being bullied or rejected by their peers. Now is the time to understand that it isn’t for attention, for it creates shame and disappointment in those who done it themselves. It alone prompts bullying to increase and can lead to suicidal tendencies if left alone. Self-inflictions can be started from traumatizing events or mental health issues.
This is the time to understand others who cause harm to themselves. To help them put the weapon of self-torture down once and for all. A famous former self-harmer,Demi lovato once stated,“…And you’re worth more than harming yourself” simply stating you’re worth the trouble and nothing can replace you. A perfect world does not exist but not impossible. The ending is near and the beginning is far. All it take is time and steps in order of reducing the 20 million documented reports of self-harm that occurs yearly. As famous rock star Andy biersack stated,“Life gives you enough scars, you don’t need to manufacture own.” Self harm is a hard topic to talk about and help one to recover ,for it is easy to trigger one’s urge to harm. You are perfect no matter what, damaging your skin is not going to solve your problems, be you and don’t let people or anything else get you down.

    1. I love the detailing and examples your speech included and how relateable it is to the problems society has todayʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

  11. Ashley, i really appreciate the anecdote you included in your speech. Your word choice really struck me with a load of emotions

  12. Briana Saephanh
    Mr. Coey

Bullying is a recurring problem in society that happens anywhere; it affects everyone, from a elementary school kid to an adult. It’s now an even more vast issue since technology has improved greatly, enabling people to find vulnerable victims more easily while hiding behind a screen. About 4,400 people commit suicide because of bullying.
People are bullied because how different they are, and of their appearance. They’re even bullied for their gender and ethnicity. Bullying takes a huge toll adolescents, for they want to fit in with a group so that they are not alone. Most adolescents feel that they need to please everyone, so they’re pressured to stage acts they are not comfortable to do to receive everyone’s appreciation. Furthermore, people care too much about what others think of them. I see the lonely person wandering, desperately trying to find a place to fit in. But it’s time to stop. It’s time to stop trying to please everyone, for it’s mentally draining you. Not everyone will like you and that’s okay because you won’t get along with everyone either.
I can feel the gloomy loneliness of the victim and the bully. We don’t know the oppressor’s nor the victim’s personal life. The bully probably does what they do to seek attention. In addition, we don’t know if the victim is going through tough problems themselves. Most people may put up with the bully’s acts but it hurts them on the inside. I hear the silent cries of the victim that they don’t want others to hear. Their tears of pain dry on their face. They’re afraid to defend themselves because they think it would escalate the problem; he or she would think that it’s a sign of weakness.
However, it’s time to stop. It’s time to get out of your shell and stand up for yourself. It’s time to show the bullies that their opinions don’t matter. You’re your own person. You have your own goals for your own life. You can say if you’re living your life wrong or not and you can change it. I have a dream people will be comfortable being themselves. I have a dream people will stand up for themselves and to say what is on their mind. I have a dream people will understand that the opinions of others doesn’t define the type of person you are.

    1. I love the fact you put “It’s time to stop trying to please everyone, for it’s mentally draining you. Not everyone will like you and that’s okay because you won’t get along with everyone either.” mainly due to the fact it’s the cold truth about life.

  13. The Overgrowth of Garbage

Well well well, what do we have here? Buckle up students, lock on your seatbelts. Specifically just imagine one, you’re gonna have lots of fun reading this! GARBAGE, yes, garbage, why do we have to throw so much garbage? Just too much waste even littering. 2078 into the future, our world is filled with building blocks of trash; there’s no more room for the ground to bury any more trash. In the San Francisco Bay Area, for example, garbage is all over the cities and the environment. The cold air is dirty, and the filthy ocean is filled with tons of dead fish. I see paper and plastic in the shallow ocean and at the beach. I hear dolphins and seagulls crying while laying on the ground. I feel like the Earth needs us all now. Garbage is like a swarm of annoying bees. The dump truck cannot pick up any more pieces of junk. Now is the time to throw away less trash. Or later you’ll start seeing tons of them outside one day when you wake up in the morning. Now is the time to not waste so much food. If you don’t care about how much garbage you throw away, you need to act now. Like the great Wall-E movie, their planet is overwhelmed by trash, so the humans had to leave. All the plants are dead, rotten, vanished, no signs of life, and dirty air. I have a dream that when we stop littering, not a single item of trash will be on our streets. I have a dream that everyone will use their products wisely and with care in the next few years. I HAVE A DREAM THAT WE ALL WILL STOP LITTERING!!!

Decades have gone by with gun violence being apart of everyone’s day to day lives. Treyvon Martin Luther King Jr, John F Kennedy, and Selena Quintanilla are all historical figures who are victims of gun violence.
Living in a world with gun violence going on everyday, some cases don’t get noticed as well as it would if it were done to a famous person or if it was shown in the media. In my society and my media, I see young kids wearing RIP sweaters and shirts. I hear mothers mourning for the death of their child. I feel victimized.
My family was struck with gun violence in 2013.
I was hurt. I was angry. I was confused. I was distraught. I was in denial.
I grieved for weeks. I cried for hours at a time, but violence was not one to come to mind. Not once did I think to seek revenge and cause the pain I have felt to someone else. Fighting back with violence was never my aim. Standing to the crime was the way I fought back.
Healing, moving forward, and prospering was the way i fought back.
Living my life at new perspective, renewing my routine and mindset was my consequence depending on which path I took. Negative or positive.
I and thousands of others are faced with this decision almost everyday.
Now is the time for us to stand up.
Now is the time for us to protect others from gun violence.
Now is the time to protest this crime.
Like other powerful leaders who have stood up to this harsh crime. We can stand up against gun laws. Having more heavily enforced gun laws can change the future of so many others. We won’t have people going and shooting in revenge or dangerously protesting.
So it is time to stand up and speak out.

    1. Ashley,
Not only do I appreciate you including historical figures into your speech, but I especially appreciate how you added your own personal experience. By adding in your own personal experience, it gives this speech a greater effect on gun violence and how it can hurt us not only physically but mentally.

    My Dream Speech: Smoking

Thank you all for allowing me to present my speech. I would like to inform you all about an epidemic that has been quite popular for centuries. Why pollute the Earth with toxic fumes?

To begin with, Native Americans grew Tobacco. In North America, Tobacco was a cash crop. 1612 was the development of Tobacco production as a cash crop. As the 1800’s came around, several methods of Tobacco usage were invented. Cigarettes being a valuable matter. As of the present, Cigarettes are smoked commonly and are found in most places, just a couple dollars away from a vicious time consuming suffer relatively cancer. A pack of Cigarettes is within hands reach. One pack starts at convenient pricing, ranging from 6-10 dollars.

Smoking starts a sensation in between the mouth and gums. Smoking has a painfully and distinctively outcome. Effects like Gum disease can be a major issue. The sensation of smoking causes such, to be affected for the entertainment and for most influence. Chemicals often degrade us. Will we let a degrading chemical ruin us internally?

I see cigarette boxes littered everywhere. I hear lighters switched on following the sound of the flickering flame. I feel unhealthy when I breathe in second-hand smoke. I feel like I’m suffocating. Smoking is like a fog of destruction. Cigarettes are vapors of death.

Now is the time to prevent additional percentage to the large rate of lung cancer. Now is the time to stop occasional daily use. Now is the time to stop the growth of Tobacco. “Like the great Bob Marley, his astonishing quote “Herb is the unification of mankind”. Although some may enjoy the feeling of smoking, it still harms your one life.

I have a dream that cigarette factories close down. I have a dream that humanity cares about what we breathe in so that we have a chance to live healthy lives. Smoking effects are like death wishes. A smoke a day is one short breath away.

    1. I love your speech, but mostly i love when you stated, “Smoking is like a fog of destruction.” …great simile.

  16. One of the main problems in our world is pollution, and pollution has been in this world for centuries now. The main source that caused this problem to skyrocket was Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was the process of human power changing into machinery that functions alone properly. These machines is what gave us the advancement of technology, but it is what gave us unhealthy air. The inventions started in Great Britain in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The country was able to begin the revolution, because of how much resources the country had.
If the world had never been through an Industrial Revolution, then we would have not gain all of the technology and inventions we have now today. We would have not gained all the machines that produces pollution into our skies, and they’re are so-called “helpful” when they actually sicken our air. Los Angeles remains as nation’s leader of worst pollution. These machines have ruined the lives of people in the past, and we wouldn’t have gained the machines that ruin the lives of people today. People have been affected by the harms of pollution, for pollution is unhealthy to breath in. We would have not gained people that transfers their cars, motorcycles, airplanes, jets, any inventions that pollute our air into a necessity. People like to have a remorse toward their car, even though we know that car has no remorse towards us. We cannot gain any feelings to a simple machine that’ll hurt our world, for one day we will regret having these inventions in our lives.
Our world and our lives can survive without any machines, inventions, technology, for we have seen our ancestors of the past live in this world without any items or accessories. The reason inventions have been created was to make our lives easier, but there is no reason for these inventions to be created to harm our world. These inventions have no reason to be created to harm our world. These inventions have no reason to be created to harm the living species, our animals, or our pets of this world. As a force of action this is why I believe that we still have the time, to connect our minds, and construct a world that’ll forever be environment friendly. We still have the time, to discontinue the harm of people from the toxic air that are produced from: cars, motorcycles, airplanes, jets, smoking, especially factories. We still have the time, to shut down these factories, for we have the technology of a solar energy power plant. Germany is one of the known countries that uses solar energy power plants, but they still have factories that pollute. We can help strive for a goal where we don’t any factories just a power plant that uses energy from the sun.
Los Angeles was struck by a chemical explosion on the 16th of June, 2016. Two-hundred people were evacuated from their home in Fruitland, and this explosion started at 2:30 am, continuing until night. More than three-thousand residents were left without any source of electrical power. When the technicians tried to fixed the electricity they successfully repaired the power except for 156 residents, but that was soon repaired as well. The South Coast Air Quality Management District reported that Fruitland’s air quality had a positive chance of being unhealthy air.
My Dream, is that one day the people of this world would soon realize the damage of pollution. My Dream, is that the machines will be put away to rest, so we can let our people’s minds rise up. My Dream, is that humanity can live in fresh breathing air, and actually use machines that are “helpful” for us and our environment.

  17. What it’s like to be judged

Have you ever seen a man lying on the floor, shaking, rattling the ground?
It’s quite indecent how people walk pass him as if they hear no sound
The sounds of his agony, his anxiety, the desperate cry for a lifting hand
But people still look straight ahead, as if a wall blocked that poor man
It’s his fault, its his choice, they say, to take those stones
But put yourself in his position, he’s lost hope and is lying there all alone
Does it not seem cruel to you the way people think?
Their selfish thoughts, and their judgement on people who they think appear “weak”

People don’t understand a person’s stage behind their curtains, what leads them to the  intake of these soul-devouring drugs
They turn towards weed for comfort, as if it were a leaning shoulder
But you have no right to judge
You’re not doing anything to help them, you’re only making their world colder
Here i am asking you to show them some love

Last week on a train ride i sat next to two high-classed girls
The security guard smiled at them and walked past them
He told me “I’m going to need to check your ticket and your bag”
And he sat close to me, looking at me sternly throughout the ride
What was it that alarmed him?
    Was it my tan-brown skin?
Did my dark brown eyes intimidate him?
Did my stocky walk caused by the weight of my two bags make him feel uneasy?
Was is my large grey sweater along with my hoodie what made me look suspicious?
Whatever the cause was, i was offended
Don’t tell me “he was doing his job” when there were others around who were not suspected

I feel for those who still get judged by their appearance because…
The long walks disturbed by roars of laughter still echo through my head
The frowning faces of teachers see me do well in school still haunt me in bed
The pushes i received from other girls because of my old raggedy clothing, yes i can still feel their cold hands against my back and chest

Why bring down the people with dreadlocked beards, but bring the man in a suit a stool for his feet?
Why not give the man who walks over 10 miles a day just to find somewhere to sleep, somewhere to eat
The man who has blisters on bare feet and hands
Why not give HIM, the stool to rest his damaged feet?
Why not give the hand you gave the man who spilled his coffee,
to the man who had fallen off his bike because of the bags on his back he carries everyday of the week?

I stand to testify that it isn’t about what you have to show, it is what you have to offer
I stand to speak for those who deserve a lot more appreciation
I stand to see a change the view in other people’s eyes
I stand to repeat “if you judge; for when you judge another, you condemn yourself…”
I stand to speak what was written 2,000 years ago, “Why, then, do you look in your brother’s eye but do not notice the rafter in your own eye?”
I have a dream to spread a contagious infection called love, acceptance, and appreciation.

    1. Kayla I really liked your use of allusion in your speech, also I like how used a lot of imagery and statistics. Great job!

    2. Kayla,
I liked how you included quotes into your speech. It really brought out other’s perspective on your topic on being judged. I especially liked how you included “as if a wall blocked that poor man” and “people don’t understand a person’s stage behind their curtains”, for it really comes to show the inexistence one can feel.

    3. I like how you add many images to your speech. For example, when use the time when your in the train as a image to connect how it’s like to be judge.

    4. I appreciated how a few of your sentences had a sense of rhythm into them, and i understood your own self-reference of being offended. It gave your essay a good example.

    5. Kayla I like your metaphor, “People don’t understand a person’s stage behind their curtains, what leads them to the intake of these soul-devouring drugs” .

  18. Kindness

These are not the words of a scientist with a degree.
These are not the words of a specialized doctor in philosophy, nor the words of an almighty being whose seen the world as a whole. But a simple voice of the youth that just wants so badly to be heard. Through a young age, we’ve all been taught that “life is not perfect”, and that “the world can be an ugly place”. But it seems that these sayings, these “ words of encouragement” have been taken as excuses. You see, when you tell a six year old these things they now take it to heart, and now have had their blooming, hopeful mindset, be planted in a seed that sprouts a settled state that is the belief that their suffering is a necessary, a chapter through life that has been desensitised by the people who also grew up and took these sayings to the extreme. It seems to have almost become a tradition for a child to be raised in a broken home with a single parent. It seems that the sexual assault of young girls and boys, men and women, and everyone in between be accepted by our twisted, blinded society. It seems that it is now normal for the innocent amount of pigment in our skin be the gaping cavity that separates and excludes in our now segregated humanity.
Humankind the world has challenged you with the intent of toughening your skin but in the process you’ve lost your hearts. And for that, for that humanity you have lost. The blame goes to the world that is portrayed as heartless and cold when in reality it is us who are cold and heartless, that make up this world that is nothing but our own.
It is us who hold onto this evil that we’ve been taught to pass to our future generations, friends and family, and even strangers we pass by in the streets. It us us who hold the power to bring an end to this murder of compassion, the killing of love and the turning of our heads when it comes to our muffled inner voices that is our human nature that screams for unity and affection. We are not just simple minded animals incapable of feelings of such complexity. In a world that is cruel, it dares you to be kind, so tell me, are you strong enough to carry the will to go against it?

    1. Nancy,
I loved how you explained that words of kindness doesn’t take much as being “a doctor specialized in philosophy” and “a scientist with a degree”. In other words, not only was it a great hook, but it came to show that words and actions of kindness doesn’t take as much effort as we think.

    2. I like when you said killing of love and murdering compassion, it strongly demonstrated the overall topic of your speech

    3. Nancy,

This is a powerful and introspective speech you have written. I especially appreciate how your use of parallelism at the start draws me in and makes me want to read on.

  19. Money

Now day, moneys was the center of the universe and one of the biggest economy problem. Many peoples are too worry about having too much or not having enough money. Without money, you can’t buy or do anything you wanted. Having no money is like the end of your life but having more money is like the beginning of your world. Therefore, peoples can’t live without money if it disappear out of the world.
Since money is so important to everyone, poverty is existing everywhere around the world. I see peoples fighting against each over money. I hear them cursing each other out for having too much or too little money. I feel the pressure of evilness toward many people whenever their talking about money. I’m scared that one day, money will become an even more threatening problem in the near future.
Don’t you ever wonder, having too much money would be like? Or, not having enough money would be like? Like the great old day, where money aren’t important. Silver are like money and people earn less than dollars everyday. History record that, money aren’t as important as now day. Such as, making too much money can caused an inflation to the country, yet some country who aren’t rich is the beginning cause of poverty.
Those who are rich, earn thousands and thousands of dollars everyday. However, it’s not enough, for they works days and nights to earn more money. They don’t have anytime to do anythings else, yet they have the time to works and filled in their pocket. Those who are poor, earn earn less than thousand every weeks. Therefore, they need more money and works days and nights to earn more to help support their family. As many peoples are working more their suppose to because of their love for money, it had result them illness. Still, they are happy, for they see money as their life. Everyone, no matter rich or poor, believe that love and happiness is like a dream, that it can be achieved through money. Which, everyone wish and desires can only be result in how rich you are.
Now is the time to cried out and seek for more money! To stop this violent fighting against each other and see money as a war. We should stop seeing each other as enemies but as friends. Now is the time to produce more money so everyone can be richer. Therefore, they don’t have to worry for not having enough money and poverty won’t exist anymore. Now is the time to change the world, to become a rich well known country. Our country will become a country of wealth, whom is the most richest out of all other countries.
I have a dream that one day, money won’t become a economy problem anymore. For which, everyone don’t see money as a conflict but as a hope, that will guide everyone to become wealthy. I have a dream that from this day onward, everyone will become rich and equal, that poverty will disappear from this world. For we, fighting and discriminating against each other over money. I have a dream that one day these war will stop and we will happily share money!

    1. Pang,
I liked how you included thoughts about the future and how money can affect us when you stated, “I’m scared that one day, money will become an even more threatening problem in the near future”.

    Discrimination

Today all around the world, where discrimination is a game towards the human race. It’s funny how one has the ability to discriminate another. There are 12 different ways a human being gets discriminated. Age, disability, equal pay, genetic information, harassment, national origin, pregnancy, race/color, religion, retaliation, sex, and sextual harassment. Some people think it’s real assuming for all these threats. In this society that we have today. It’s very difficult for people to be themselves. To be happy on who they are. To walk free with no one holding their hands and walking by their sides to keep them safe.and to be proud of who they are.

Discrimination is the same thing as bullying. Physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying, and cyberbullying. Where I have countered the same interactions, where other people talked about my skin color and religion. Saying “you don’t belong here, the only place you belong is no where.” just imagine how I felt. I know I wasn’t happy about that. I felt emotional, where most of the men say they don’t cry. They never get sad. Whereas, most women might say the same thing because they are womens. For me I know that i am a young adult, and i admit that i get emotional as a man. I really don’t care if I cry alone, with another person, or a crowd. Everyone in this world has feelings towards everything in their lives and everything around them.

Same thing happend to my great friend where he too got discriminated on being Punjabi or a Sikh. one day he was just sitting on a bench with a smile on his face. When two caucasian people came to him saying, “look we have another sick person on the streets.” telling his that his turban was a disgrace to the humanity. And his hair looks like a girl. My friend stood up, took off the turban cut his hair, and left me, his family, and his friends. I don’t know where he is today. I still tear up just thinking about what people can do to other human beings. In my mind i have so many questions to ask everyday, and that is why? Why do people have to be like this? Why is the society breaking apart? Why do we live in a cruel world? Why are we not treated equally? But the only response I get back, is the silent ring or the wind.

I see how lonely the human soul when it gets ripped apart. I hear the sorrowful cry where a human will be crying as a whimpering dog. I feel the same pain as one of my friend or friends get discriminated. Discrimination is like a wave of an ocean.

I have a dream that one day we will all be treated as one, and never looked at differently! I have a dream that we all will respect others! I have a dream that we be successful in life. I have a dream where we will make our historical heroes proud. Like Martin Luther King Jr. gave his own dream speech to fight for his rights/freedom, and segregation.
Now is the time to change it! Now it the time to stop all the hatred! Now is the time to be treated as one! Now is the time to respect other people and other race! Now is the time to show the world who we can be in our lives!
Now is the time to change everything!

    1. I like how you said “I hear the sorrowful cry where a human will be crying as a whimpering dog.” I like how you compared the sorrowful cry and a whimpering dog.

    2. I find your essay quite interesting about discrimination, and I like how you included you and your friend as a reference of discrimination. It became a good example for your essay.

    3. Jess,
I liked how you included all the different types of discrimination there could be. This gives us a bigger look into how we can discriminate people even though we don’t think we really are.

    4. Jesneel,
Thank you for not only addressing the discrimination of races but of disability, pregnancy, and many other ways that need to be recognized. The repetition you used at the end of your speech catches my attention, as a reader, and makes me interested in your voice for opposing discrimination. Continue to have the growth mindset and the passion you had for making this speech and you’ll most likely pass this semester (jk). Good work!

    5. i really like how you said, ” i hear the sorrowful cry where a human will be crying as a whimpering dog.” i like how you compared a humans cry towards a whimpering dog. overall i really like your speech because its very touching and i can relate to what your friend went through

  21. “Citizens of color”

I am very grateful that you have allowed me to present my speech to you all. I would like to thank all my friends, family, and teachers who have helped me throughout my whole life. As we go into the year 2017, I still see a problem that has not been resolve since the development of this nation. When I was in the seventh grade I was a victim of racial profiling. My friends and I were walking to the nearest gas station when a police officer came and parked in front of us. The police officer handcuffed us and called our parents. The police officers thought we were gang members trying to get into some trouble.
Racial profiling has started since the beginning of this nation. Once slavery was started, African Americans were the prime victim of racial profiling. Mr. Martin luther King has been fighting for African American’s rights. The Civil Rights movement led by Mr. Martin Luther King has prevented most problems for example racial profiling, racism, and losing civil rights. Going into the year 2017, the police force has had a reputation of racial profiling African Americans. This led to protests, riots, and not being able to trust the police. These actions lead to death rates in the United States. These actions lead to the grudge that is being held by the victims of racial profiling. I see the the death rates in the United States rising.
Racial profiling is not an end but a beginning. In this modernized society we have to change. WE have to go back to those days were working together was the key to success. WE have to go back to those days were society will not judge a human being because the color of their skin. I still have a dream that one day we will unite together as brothers and sister not African Americans, Caucasian, Asian, Mexican, etc… I still have a dream that one day the grudge of revenge will be transformed to a sea of unity. I hear the cries of hatred. I feel the tears of injustice running down my hand.2017 is the year that we stop racial profiling. 2017 is the year that we will not be “citizens of color”. 2017 is the year that I can call anyone brothers and sisters. 2017 is the year that we forget what has happened in the past and and think in the present.
    2017 IS THE YEAR!

    1. Xao,
I greatly appreciate how you included your own personal experience. Not only did it give your speech a big “HELLO!”, but it came to show that racial profiling really does exist and that it isn’t something that we see through T.V or social media.

    2. Xao,
I take a liking to the appreciative tone you had at the beginning of your speech for the people you love and respect. Also, the anecdote of your own experience with racial profiling gives me a better understanding of the situation at hand and the interest you have with this world problem. The efficiency and persistence really shows through your speech; apply this ability to the rest of your works and you will soon blossom into the flower you were born to be.

  22. Motives of Violence

Many will still remember the numerous tragedies that have defaced the glory of this great nation, terrible events that have taken the lives of many innocent people and will haunt the dreams of those who have witnessed and experienced such events unfold. Many mass shootings that occur in the present day can be reminiscent of famous attacks like the massacre that took place in Columbine, Colorado, and the incident in Newtown, Connecticut, which robbed over twenty people of their lives. These types of situations have become more frequent over the years and many have drawn conclusions as to why this increase has occurred, but there are a few that outshine all others.
Deep within the heart of brutality and the cancer of society, a nation lays waste at the feet of its own people as they drastically retaliate against their own suffering in a manner that risks the lives of others as well as themselves. With an abundance of wealth and weaponry, the cold metal jaws of injustice tightens its grip around the throat of society as our brothers and sisters exploit the resources provided to relieve themselves of their own frustrations and put an end to their own suffering without taking notice that they cause the destruction of the lives of others. These people are those that are abused and suffer from mental trauma, those that are quite often misunderstood and those that are shunned for their afflictions. They are those that suffer in the safety of their own homes and anguish in the security of their own schools. They torture themselves both mentally and physically due to the stress of their environment until they are left with nothing to live for. When the cry of spilled innocent blood is heard as a bullet of irreparable suffering tears through the flesh of the unwary, the nation accuses the media the sufferer was exposed to as the reason they committed such an atrocity, along with the availability of the weapons they used while some fail to recognize the blemish of agony that fueled them with an appetite for vengeance.
They do not take notice of numerous weaknesses in the system set in place that is supposed to defend the defenseless, they do not give a second thought to the intentions of those that order weaponry under the protection of the second amendment. They do not take notice of the quality of parenting that a person receives at home and the quality of security a person is provided at school. The words of pain that are uttered from those affected by family that lost one of their own are quick to shift the blame on the culprit but they do not take notice of the various ways the incident could have been prevented. The solution is not to tighten our laws but to strengthen our security, we must guard our weaponry like we would guard our children. We must tend to our children and those in suffering when they are in need, we must defend those that cannot defend themselves against the harsh conditions of the American reality.
Those that need support through their darkest days have been ignored for far too long and its is our duty to care for one another, and we will not rest until every man, woman, and child feels safe in the land of opportunity. We will not rest until those that battle themselves can get the help they need, we will not rest until the future of our children is secure and the shadows of fear cannot reach them. We will not rest until light is brought to the dark depths of a broken society, now is the time for this nation to fulfill its title as “The Land of the Free”. Together we will stand against the threat of brutality and the enemy of tranquility, together we will unite and prosper in the face of catastrophe.

    1. Joshua,
I liked how you threw in the metaphor, “robbed over twenty people of their lives” and giving it a bit of sparkle instead of saying something such as, “took over twenty people of their lives”. But I especially appreciate how you added different events of violence into your speech, as it comes to show the many violent events that have taken place.

  23. Banning Money

Hello fellow classmates and teacher, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my speech. I am going to be speaking about money, and why we should ban it from the world. To begin with, people’s biggest problem is money. Money has put a label on people, and caused people to have serious situations at hand. For instance, since the very beginning the rich have had more than the poor. This caused the middle class to be treated as dirt, while the rich would be treated with respect. In the 1800’s during the Industrial Revolution the aristocracy despised the fact that the middle class was rising. The aristocracy thought they were better because of how much money they had. Hearing that the middle class was rising they were getting angry, but in honesty they were jealous. Jealous that they weren’t able to come up with such astonishing ideas. How much wealth you made, told them how much intelligence you would have. Multiple people who were poor weren’t able to express their thought because of how much money they had. Some ideas would need money in order to get their idea out there.

I had seen people on the streets because they had no money. They were dressed in torn clothing, and had dirt all over them. I hear my parents struggle with how much money we have, yet they don’t tell us because they don’t want to trouble us. I feel as if we are being punished for trying to be happy. Trying to work as hard as we can to earn money to get our happiness. We shouldn’t have to go through that process to have happiness.

Most people would think that money can solve situations, but honestly money is like a problem to our people. Money is the root of all evil, yet we choose to sacrifice our life for it. Why sacrifice your happiness for money? Money cannot buy happiness, so why sacrifice it? Money makes people unhealthy because you end up depending on it. Depending your life on one thing can’t get you anywhere. You will be stuck in the same place every single day, which is not a healthy decision to make for yourself.

Now is the time we benefit our lives, by taking away money. Getting rid of every single last bit of it! Now is the time we stand up and make the world a better place. Now is the time we fight, with our intelligence, we can make a difference. Like the great Martin Luther King JR., Malala, Rosa Parks, and Chief Joseph. Dr. King who took a stand to be equal because discrimination happened, Malala who stood up for girls and education rights, Rosa Parks who refused to move from her seat, and Chief Joseph who was forced out of his home.

All these prominent leaders fought back for their equal rights. We all are egalitarian in multiple ways. If all these prominent leaders can stand up, then so can I.

I have a dream that one day people won’t be looked at in a contrast way because of how much money they have. I have a dream that everyone will be equal. I HAVE A DREAM, that money will vanish from this world! It will take all our problems away and make this world a more healthier environment. Not just by the people, but by nature itself. We won’t have to worry about labels, or cutting down trees to make more money. We will all be equal and free from this cause! It’ll make our lives much easier and healthier thank you for reading my speech.

    1. I agree with you about banning money, because money affects our life from putting us in a rank! Money is also making our world unhealthy.

    2. Chloe,
I liked how the very first thing you pointed out was that “people’s biggest problem is money”. It gives a big opening to a problem that many people face and have a conflict with.

    3. i really like how you said, “money has put a label on people.” Money really has changed our ways and our life. I still wonder to myself today, what if money was never invented. Will there be self fish people or would everyone be equally?

  24. Alienated

Racism has been dated back since the 16th century of Spain and even further as slaves who were discriminated as they had skin colors that were not shared with the Europeans.

Jews were discriminated and excluded since their beliefs were different from others, for they were wearing different shades of color, had new views on how they wanted to live, and because they were different, they were aliens among these humans, they were outsiders who were seen as those who never belonged.

I see their eyes picturing me as invisible, not even heard or seen.

I hear their laughs of mockery at my demise, satisfied at my failure.

I feel them spitting on me with their hatred of my color, of who I am.

Their words were like the gum stuck to your shoe, no matter how much you tried to scrape it off it will always leave a piece with you.

The walls blank, no color needed or wanted, no room to share.

They see the world as only the color they desire; no words, actions, or thoughts could change the world they thought was only theirs.

Now is the time to realize what we all know, we are the same.

Now is the time to look beyond the various ethnicities and colors.

Now is the time to see the change has already progressed, people from around the world coming together to form a bond of love, happiness, and life despite their differences.
Some may think signing bills or acts ends racism, but it’s only the beginning.

Like the great Nelson Mandela once said: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion…”. He was right because people are influenced and taught to hate, people are taught to love, and whether they let one’s views of who a person is based on their skin determine their character is their choice.

I have a dream that every single one of us will open our eyes. Those who are racist, their eyes are closed and they can’t see the beauty we can.

I have a dream that my dream won’t be a dream anymore. It will be the life we live, as one, as a community of equality.

I HAVE A DREAM OUR HEARTS WILL LOVE.
    OUR MINDS WILL OPEN.
    OUR EARS WILL LISTEN.
OUR EYES WILL SEE THE BEAUTY OF ALL THE COLORS IN THE WORLD; THE COLORS OF OUR SKIN.

    1. Great job using a simile people can relate to and understand. “Their words were like the gum stuck to your shoe, no matter how much you tried to scrape it off it will always leave a piece with you”. Also, the last portion in all capital letters really helps you get your point across.

    2. Dang you really spoke to me deeply, like we are who we are and if they cant accept our colors then their blind. Good job Jayana keep up the good work.

    3. Jay,
I loved your opening, “Racism has been dated back since the 16th century of Spain and even further as slaves who were discriminated as they had skin colors that were not shared with the Europeans”. This honestly grabbed my attention and wows me!

  25. Changes

America has been known for discrimination, such as in 1964, Civil Rights Act begins due to racial segregation in America. African Americans felt alienated, mistreated and oppressed by society. Also in 2001, Twin Towers took place; assumptions led Muslims to be labeled as terrorists. These are examples of inequity.

I see this generation falling into an abyss of hatred.
I hear malicious comments shooting into my ears.
I feel a roller-coaster of emotions, but I am mostly disheartened.

We are becoming like wild monkeys, only worse.
Our world, becoming dark due to hatred.

We must learn to acknowledge this problem and take action to protect the future generations from not feeling insecure of their own skin and to avoid history from repeating itself.
We must learn from the past and move forward.
We must learn to unite and face challenges in the world, for we aren’t able to fight these battles alone.
We must learn to realize that a religion shall not be labeled and perceived as terrorists but as a group no different from other religions, just different in beliefs.

Like the great Martin Luther King had said, “I have a dream.” And just like Martin Luther King, I have a dream.

I have a dream that a religion would not be feared or degraded.
I have a dream that a person would not be considered a criminal or thief by the color of their skin, when walking down a street.

I HAVE A DREAM that no matter the color, race, or beliefs; we are equal, we shall be treated equal. We are no different; we are unique.

    1. i like the part of your speech,”I have a dream that a person would not be considered a criminal or thief by the color of their skin, when walking down a street.” 🙂

    2. Tricia, I liked how you included the statement, “We are becoming wild monkeys, only worse.” I feel that this comparison is a great way to come to show of who we are as human beings and what we may possibly become.

    3. I liked the transition paragraph you used to lead into the ending of your speech. “Like the great Martin Luther King had said, ‘I have a dream.’ And just like Martin Luther King, I have a dream.”

    4. I truly agree with your statement about “muslims to be labeled as terrorist” , and i also agree with our “generation falling into an abyss of hatred”.

  26. Lost Peace

People may believe that peace has already been found around the world, yet we haven’t taken a deeper look into the many problems that shield the peace that we desire. From as long as we may remember and from the history that we seek about our world, peace was never to be found. For as long as we remember the many wars that have taken place has swiped away many lives. For as long as we remember, discrimination ranging from race to sexuality never reaches an end. Acceptance and gratitude has been taken away from us and shielded like our very own dignity. Many tears have fallen like the raindrops from one’s eyes, screaming deep down to simply be let free. What happened to acceptance? What happened to to love? What happened to to what was once known as humanity?
Discrimination is a topic heard from near to far. Discrimination has been around for as long as we may remember, yet today we still see the sight of people spreading actions and words of disgrace. You see people gaining on each other for the color of their skin. You see and hear people calling each other names. You see people like Donald Trump, who want nothing to do with people of other races, wanting to kick people out simply because they were immigrants. Let the world be one. Let the world be a place of peace and happiness where we can all join hands to become stronger!
Inequality is sought to be found in not only the United States, but in the many countries that surround us. All around the world there are people who are less fortunate. People who don’t work. People who don’t have food. People who don’t have a roof over their head or school to go school. Yet just when people want to do better for themselves and those around them, hatred is spreaded like lava and stings like acid. Simply because one strives to do better, they get brought down, for the jealousy of one is the reason for irrational hatred. Let us all come together and help one another to strive for better!
Now is the time for humanity to be restored. Now is the time for people of all race, beliefs, and social class to get along and love one another! Now is the time to make the world a whole by bringing us all together.
Like the brave Martin Luther King Jr. recited in his speech, “One day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sister and brother.” Yet all the discrimination hasn’t all gone away, it is always never too late to start. Even with a harsh start, I hope to see everyone to join hands to become one, despite the age, gender, or belief. Just as Malala had stated in her speech at the United Nations, “One child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change the world.” The power is in your hands!
    So I have a dream!
I have a dream that one day humanity will be restored and that we’ll all finally find peace in our world. That people of all age, sexuality, race, and belief will accept each other and learn to love. That the people will stop all of the irrelevant violence and harm.
I have a dream that we can prove to all of our leaders who fought for our rights: such as Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malala Yousafzai that what they did made an impact on the world. That their fighting for our rights didn’t mean nothing. That fighting for our rights HAS created a better world. A better world for not only our generations, but the many generations to come.
    I HAVE A DREAM!
I have a dream that we no longer have to feel as if we don’t belong. As if there’s no love nor peace. That one day, our world can be brought together and simply be one.
    Thank you.

    1. Descee,

I appreciate your use of allusion and your subtle but effective use of motif, such as “Discrimination” and “People,” which emphasizes your subjects.

      Coey

    2. Descee,
You didn’t only simmer down discrimination to race, but you applied labels in general, which I appreciate to the highest degree. The repetition throughout your speech makes your speech rather as a demand than a request; I highly respect that.
Always put as much effort, thought, and passion into your works like within this speech; you are going somewhere and you’ll soon find your destination. Thank you for your hard work.

  27. Throughout the entire world for as long as humans have existed – there has been one consistent problem that still exists to this day.

    Racism.

Every day, I experience the same emotions centering around race. I see constant bullying due to race. I hear many race-related issues being talked about on the news. I feel the pressure of not being accepted because of my skin color.

These issues are not just in my head. With a number of police killings in the Summer of 2016 mostly centered around African Americans when they have done nothing to provoke the officers, it’s not just them getting murdered in cold blood for no reason. Not to mention, millions of Americans voted for our current president, Donald J. Trump, who made what he stood for crystal clear, which was to deport Mexicans and build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. Racism is like having a box of crayons and not seeing all the colors. Everything said harmfully about another race is raining harmful bombs of words upon them. Now is the time to put yourself in their shoes.

Now is the time to open your eyes. Now is the time to end discrimination. Like the great Dr. King who wanted to end racism, he slowly started extinguishing the flames of racism, but each day these flames grow larger and larger, and if they’re not put out soon they will consume all humans. I have a dream that in the future the world will be a place where everyone is welcome. I have a dream that we will block out any negativity and only look at positivity. I have a dream that racism will end… starting now.

    1. Isaiah,

I appreciate how your structure emphasizes “Racism” at the beginning. Also, you simile comparing racism to an underappreciated box of crayons is very clever. Great work!

      Coey

    2. Your work was excellent isaiah, I loved the examples that you used within your speech and the refrenced you used with MLK. 🙂

    3. I liked how you made “Racism” stand out. It really made a big appearance like it’s the center of attention.

    4. Isaiah,
The use of metaphors and similes makes me jealous!(jk) Including your view and real examples of racism through the news and bullying expresses how serious racism, even to this day. Thank you for making racism your interest and informing of how serious racism is and that it needs to not be a thing anymore. Keep up the applauding performance; you have a crowd.

    5. Isaiah,
I like how you had used the un-explainable cruelties of misinformed white police officers of past years to prove a hard hitting reality

  28. I have a dream that one day everyone will come together as one and there will be no such thing as race. Since the beginning of time, different people with different backgrounds have been divided. At school I see Hmong kids hanging out with only other Hmong kids, I see black kids with other black kids , I see Mexican kids hanging out with only other Mexican kids. Hypothetically of course , i see a little white girl crying because she feels less than herself when she is shunned out of friend groups because of her skin color. I see black children trying to change their skin color so they can feel beautiful. I want others to look beyond hair texture, beyond skin color , beyond height or weight. I begin to feel very indignant when i see these problems because i want a change so badly but deep inside i know there won’t be one. 2017 is the time. NOW IS THE TIME. Now is the time to make a change. Now is the time to come together. Like the great Dr. King said in his dream speech in 1963,” I have a dream that one day my four little children will one day live in a nation where the will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” I have a dream that one day there will not be such a thing as a Hmong club or a Black club. I have a dream that one day people will begin to look beyond race. I have a dream that one day we will be all together as one.

    1. I like your use of real-world examples that you see in your real life at the beginning. “At school I see Hmong kids hanging out with only other Hmong kids, I see black kids with other black kids, I see Mexican kids hanging out with only other Mexican kids.”

    2. Shae,
I favor the use of imagery to illustrate the problem of races associating with their own race. I love the fact that you decided to address this problem and I agree with your views upon it. Indeed, it’s unnecessary for children to worry about fitting in a certain social group and any race trying to make themselves look lighter or darker than the ethnicity they should embrace. Please continue to make beautiful works.

    3. I like how you make “2017” and ” Now is the time” stand out from your speech. Also, I like how you describe the different race to make the image clearer.

  29. Unity in Diversity: Acceptance with No Exceptions

If I was to cut the palm of my hand and the palm of my Caucasian Social Studies teacher, we would bleed the same color, would we not? As humans, we all should identify with the same human rights, should we not? If so, my fellow classmates, why would we allow a categorization depict who we love, let alone associate with?

As a black, educated, equal individual, I feel the eyes of curiosity and the looks of disapproval of my infatuation for another educated, equal individual of a race unlike mine. As the criticism starts to bother me, the little voices of regret come to peak my doubts in myself and what I believe in.

    What do I believe in?

I believe in loving thy neighbor no matter what label they bare. I believe in the color of equality, the demands for change, and open arms of acceptance for unity in diversity.

    Unity in diversity.

There’s a “table of brotherhood” for all people of all races, culture, religion, or gender when there’s unity in diversity. We are all “united in togetherness” without the walls of separation, but with the doors of hospitality to all of my brothers and sisters. To all of my brothers and sisters, “it don’t matter if you’re black or white.”

Why let a contrast be the reason of separation?

Why let it decree your beliefs?

Why be afraid? Disgusted? Astonished? Stubborn? Repelled?

Why be stuck in the old ways?

We should all learn to accept each other, no matter the race, the gender, or their religion. The diversity in our world makes our world beautiful, from the blooming flowers of culture to the smiles of acknowledgement. Instead of attempting to cast away an equal individual because of color, we should all adopt the idea that “the only race is the human race.”
    This can be our lives.

We can all take credence in sundry. We can acknowledge it as equal. We can all choose not to repeat history, for we all learned about the past.

Now is the time to better our future.

Now is the time for discrimination and racism to be the last time to resurface. Notice, there are constant demands for change. This should be the last time anything has to be said.

This is the generation that respects unity in diversity.

    This can be us.

As a whole that is diverse, but equal.

“Strength lies in differences than in similarities.”

Courage, peace, and pride lies within unity and diversity.

    What do you believe in?

    1. I really appreciate how much effort you placed within the speech. The detailing of the speech is rather relateable, Keep up the good work 🙂

  30. Police Brutality

When walking the streets of Sacramento, you will see the cars of city justice patrolling the streets and taking care of crime. From some people’s perspectives the cops and or police are doing a fantastic job at what they are doing. On the other hand, there are others who disagree upon the work of the law.

I see the flashing blue and red lights and smoke expanding behind the fast moving vehicle. I can hear the loud sirens and shots being fired from their weapons, taking the lives of those who surround that gun or specifically that bullet. I feel the pain of the victims, who also witnessed the tragedy of those who took the fall. The screams of the people were like the sound of a chalkboard when you drag a rusty nail across it. The gunshot of freedom become the cause of death to a nearby friend, relative, or even a stranger.

Now is the time for everyone to speak up and let their mind express how they feel. Now is the time for us as a community and or a society and tell them, “ This is not right”! Now is the time where we keep our heads high and try to help our fellow brother or sister, no matter what race or religion, old or young, we will fight for our lives and for other lives.

Like the great Muhammad Ali, modest and greatest fighter of all time once said, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. This quote has told me in my opinion that no matter what situation you’re in, try to accomplish something go. Someday I will change the world and make it better.

I have a dream that the red fluids of our people shall not be spilled but be maintained within us. I have a dream that the horrifying looks upon our people’s faces will be wiped off permanently and replaced with a more positive look. I have a dream, where everyone will look less scared whenever they see a cop car driving by, and with that i say, “ Harm those who’ve done wrong and leave the innocent alone”.

The crime that withstands in the city or state should be monitored everyday and everywhere. Most of the crime today are being committed are from the ages 16 and up, you may not know it but there are over 55,000 teens in juvenile hall and are still being beaten by the police for the simplest of crimes.

    1. Rayiauna,
Your speech brings me to tears. I love the use of the rhetorical technique, imagery. I feel your passion for police brutality and your understanding of this unfortunate world problem. Thank you for making me feel your passion today. Keep up the wonderful work!!!
