  1. Dear Johnny,
I want to tell you about an important man who helped change our world. His name is Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Xhosa. When Nelson was 9 his father died. Before he died Nelson was put into care of his uncle. Nelson studied English, the Xhosa language, history, and Geography.

Nelson was looked up to by many people in South Africa. He is still looked up to by many people. Mandela helped many people learn how to survive behind bars. His main concern has been to help make a climate similar to nation-building, not merely to help the interests of the ANC.

    Sincerely,
    Aleki Tapa

  2. Dear Ted,
I want to tell you about an important man who helped change our world. His name is Nelson Mandela.
Mandela was born in 1918 and was the only boy of 4 others. Mandela was arrest in 1962 because he was trying to help the cause of apartheid. In 1994 he was elected president of South Africa.
Mandela survived In jail and that was what made him brave. I was surprised that he didn’t try to do suicide while in jail. When he got out of jail 20 years later, he became a good leader and taught others how to survive in jail.

When he first started school he was given the name Nelson from his teacher because she wanted him to have a English name. At the age 9 his father died. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela had 13 brothers and sisters. He was married 3 times and has fathered six children, has twenty grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren. In 1942 Mandela got his education at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and was qualified in law. He joins the ANC (African National Congress) 2 years after that.
In 1993 Nelson Mandela receives The 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Frederik Willem de Klerk “for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa”. Nelson Mandela has received more than 250 awards that are in every way honorable. Keys to cities and honorary degrees are among them, along with the peace prize. From this day people know Mandela as a man of humor, honesty and humility. Mandela stood for his and many other blacks rights and helped change the world for people like us today.
